Educational Materials

The American Lyme Disease Foundation, Inc. (ALDF) publishes a variety of educational materials for both healthcare professionals and the public (see descriptions below). All printed information has been reviewed by or produced in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or has undergone outside peer-review for scientific accuracy.

Hispanic Education Program information

The main objective of this program is to educate members of the Hispanic community in the tri-state area about Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections. Many in this primarily immigrant group work outdoors and face the threat of tick-bites on a daily basis. As such, the ALDF has developed a multi-faceted educational program designed to increase awareness of tick-borne diseases.

Strategies include dissemination of our Spanish language brochure, “Understanding Lyme Disease.” In color, the brochure has a pictorial focus and is designed to inform its readers in simple terms about tick-borne infections, proper tick removal, and the need to see a physician if symptoms occur. This informative brochure is ideal for use by health departments, employers, clinics and other organizations concerned about the health of the many individuals of this population who work outdoors on a daily basis. Sample copies are available free of charge and also may be downloaded and printed directly from our website.

Understanding Lyme Disease (Spanish language only):Designed for children aged 10-15, this colorful,well-illustrated brochure provides kids with basic facts about Lyme disease, its symptoms, diagnosis, prevention and proper tick removal. School nurses, teachers, boy and girl scout leaders, and others can effectively educate young students about the environmental threat of Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections, the importance of taking precautions, correctly identifying and removing ticks, and recognizing early symptoms.

Tick Identification Card:This wallet-sized card is packed with information, including realistic illustrations of 5 tick species that commonly bite humans, actual sizes of each life stage, comparative symptoms of 4 different tick-borne diseases (including Lyme disease), rash identification, prevention tips, and tick removal June 5, 2006 cards as a handy reference in identifying ticks – the likelihood of disease transmission can then be determined.

A Symposium – National Clinical Conference on Lyme Disease: Edited by Leonard H. Sigal, M.D., this information was published as a supplement to The American Journal of Medicine in April, 1995.
